Buuni is a Somali language and AI research initiative. We combine linguistic research with practical development, starting with the language as people really use it.

Somali language technology needs more than a translated interface. It needs data, evaluation and design that reflect how people speak, write and find information.
Our research priorities include Maxaa Tiri and Maay, digital archives, translation, speech and model evaluation. We approach each variety on its own terms and define the data and review a project needs before making claims about performance.
We work through focused collaborations with language specialists and institutions. A project can begin with an archive, a research question or a small pilot, with responsibilities and evaluation criteria agreed at the start.
